Bridgeport had its start in the year 1899 by the building of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad through that territory. The town that sprang up took its name from a bridge over the North Platte River. Bridgeport was incorporated as a village in 1901. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 1.15 square miles (2.98 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,545 citizens , 644 homeholds, and 407 families residing in the city.
