Geneva was established in 1871. It was titled after Geneva, in Switzerland, perhaps via Geneva, New York. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.04 square miles (5.28 km2), all land. The town/city serves as the Fillmore County seat and is home to the historic Fillmore County Courthouse.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,217 citizens , 926 homeholds, and 585 families residing in the city.
