Kimball was originally called Antelopeville, and under the latter name was established in about 1870 when the Union Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. It was retitled in 1885 with respect to Thomas Kimball, a barns official. Kimball was incorporated in 1888. Kimball is positioned at 41 14 1 N 103 39 34 W (41.233693, -103.659463), in the southwestern Panhandle.
According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.07 square miles (5.36 km2), all of it land. Kimball declares itself as the "The High Point of Nebraska!", as the highest point in the state is about 33 miles (53 km) from the city.
